365/243 Yummy

Creamy Chicken and Wild Rice soup! Mine was a bit thick but still very delicious! Next time I will look harder for reduced fat Half & Half and see if that makes a difference or add another can of broth.

MJ was at a sleep over so I thought I would try this recipe out on the rest of the family {MJ and Syd are our our picky eaters}. Syd had mac and cheese and CJ mostly ate saltines but the guys liked it. JD asked when I was making it again. I guess that is the best compliment you can expect from a 15 year old boy.

365/242 Just bug bites

Syd has always had a bad reaction to mosquito bites. The bites swell real big and feel as hard as a rock.

She had a 6 bites from playing outside on Saturday evening. Yesterday I noticed that they were larger than usual and weeping like poison ivy does.  I dabbed them with Calamine lotion and when she woke this morning,  they were crusted over with yellow stuff so I called the doctor.

The doc looked at them and confirmed that, indeed, they were bug bites and nothing more could be done for them to make them heal any faster. She just needs to not dig at them or they might get infected.

Easier said than done I’m afraid.

365/241 Round and round they go

We stopped back home to wait for the kids to finish the paper route. I needed to get some stuff done while I had a few minutes; the girls had other plans though…..

Syd took CJ’s hand and they ran around & around the house; through the kitchen, dining room, living room and entryway. They had a good ‘ole time and put a smile on my face.

365/240 Helping out

Syd was going through her speech cards with CJ this afternoon. I took the time to record a video of them to show the speech therapist.

Syd will not talk for the speech therapist {except for “Mama” and “All done”}. Syd will go through her cards and say them all everyday and even in the waiting room before speech therapy starts, but will not name the cards for the therapist. She is a bit stubborn that way.

365/239 Rock on!

We had a busy morning: The kids and I attended a memorial for a wonderful lady that lost her battle with cancer. Our hearts go out to the Straight family, Paulette was a very kind soul and I miss will chatting with her at the annual fish fry.

Hubby and his brother, Michael ran a half marathon in Manistee National Forest {The Big M}. Official result. Michael ran a great race and finished in 2:11:07.7, 26th overall, 1st in his age group, 60-64. Hubby finished 2:17:20.9, 44th overall, 7th in his age group, 40-44.  Hubby was happy for Michael but bummed that he himself didn’t run a better race (even though he was faster than last year).

We then left the kids and dogs at home with my brother and his family {and his dogs}. I know, it sounds like a loud crazy night for them and I thank them greatly for doing it for us.

We went with friends to the Soaring Eagle Casino to watch White Snake, Tesla and Lita Ford perform. We had great time and enjoyed spending time with our friends.

365/238 Comfort tester

Hubby is taking off this evening to sleep in his car at his race location in Manistee. CJ was very concerned about him sleeping in his car, she thought he needed to take his bed so he was comfortable. She knew his bed would not fit in his car {smarty pants} so she had to check out how he was going to to sleep.

Once she tried out the makeshift bed she was satisfied he would be comfortable. Always the little care giver.

365/237 Her world is exploding with new words

Since receiving her Baha, I thought that she should be flooded with speech therapy {I’m just the Mom, not a professional in this area, and was told that too much speech therapy could overwhelm her; which is understandable}.

She gets therapy at ESA while in class and now twice a week at the hospital. We were given flash cards to go through with her and, at first, I was skeptical if this was going to work. Syd has proven me wrong; she knows all the pictures and goes through them by herself when we are waiting and at therapy. She got 10 more cards just yesterday and though she will not talk yet at speech therapy, she knows this set of cards already.

Today I tried something new; I laid all the new cards out and asked her to point to “eat” and she did. When I asked where “arm” was, she showed me her arm. The cards are really working to broaden her vocabulary.

I had to laugh when I looked at this picture, the Baha softband gives us a bit of a struggle some days. Today it is pushing out her ears. It would be better if she left it alone once I get it on her, but she pushed it around, up and down {probably to make it more comfortable}. And check out that crazy hair, all fluffy and frizzySmile

365/236 What a face

When I left this morning to take Syd to speech therapy, I left instruction for MJ to put CJ’s hair in Pig tails. I got a call mere minutes after leaving the driveway from JD, he was letting me know that MJ had not put CJ’s hair up properly and she looked silly.

Her hair was looking good by the time I got home but I found this picture on my camera. CJ was not a happy camper with the job that MJ did. She had one pigtail in the center back of her head {not seen in this shot} and the other in the right spot.

I have to laugh, MJ gets frustrated with CJ’s attitude and sassy mouth. I can remember MJ being the same way at this age {I called it stubborn and strong willed at the time}.

365/235 This might slow him down

JD tweaked his hamstring at practice tonight. He complained a bit yesterday but seemed fine until he came home from practice tonight.  After some prodding from Hubby, he wrapped his leg with an Ace bandage.  If we could only get him to follow the rest of the RICE approach (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), he might actually heal faster.

365/234 Bye Bye Cream Carpet

I remembered at 11:45 last night that this was big garbage week for us {we can set larger type junk out once a month here in the city}.  Hubby grumbled when I poked him and told him that the truck usually comes early and I did not want this carpet taking up space in our garage for the next month if we missed it.

He refused to help, so I woke JD up and the two of us hauled it to the road in about 10 minutes. I think I owe him a Slurpee or something for his heroic efforts.

I am just thrilled to have this carpet out of the house. I have been trying to get rid of it for a year now. {As of yesterday we have officially lived here for 1 year.}

I also got my van back today. Just seven days ago it had a crunch in the driver’s side doors and now it looks like it never was. Thank you Garber body shop.

365/233 Alllll Doneeeee!

Need I say more? We finished it this morning and I’m so happy to have it completed. Now I just need to get Hubby to put on the quarter round so I can begin painting the trim.  I wonder when he’ll have time for that ???

365/232 Story time

I had the “just one more row” attitude going tonight. It was past the girls bedtime and I just wanted to finish a few more rows before bed. I nixed the reading time with CJ tonight {I know, I know, bad Mommy} as it was getting late. But Hubby stepped in and read to her {Super Dad to the rescue:}

We have been reading a chapter a night of the Junie B Jones  Series. CJ and I are getting a kick out of the books. {These are the same books that MJ read many moons ago; loving the hand me downs.}

As you can see from the picture we still need to finish ripping down the wall paper in CJs room. There are 5 rooms that still have wallpaper and/or glue to room from the walls. I’m waiting to rent the steamer from the HD and have a full day of time to devote to the task. The latter seems hard to come by these days.

365/231 My next project

When we moved in, I was eager to rip out all the carpet. I knew the 2 large dogs and 4 messy kids would not be kind to cream and light beige carpet. Hubby was not so eager and I did not, at the time, have spare time to remove it nor deal with what I would replace it with.

I did however peek under each and every carpeted room. I just had to know if there was hardwood underneath. CJ’s room has linoleum, the bath has little peach and pink tiles and the basement stairs showed yellow painted pine {at least the top step was yellow}

Well, I got a bit of a surprise last weekend when I finally ripped the carpet off the stairs… Yellow and Blue painted pine.  Maybe the previous owners were U of M fans or just very supportive of the local High School who has the same/similar colors. I think the orange was added later just before the carpet was installed.

Anyway this is the next thing on to do list, after we finish the floor and put quarter round up and I paint the trim….  Maybe I’ll get to it before Christmas Smile

365/230 tired girl

Today is Syd’s last day of school for the summer.  She will start back up in September, when the public schools starts the fall term.

She has been sleeping erratically again and got up early (6:30 am).  I thought we might have some trouble staying awake the rest of the day. After I got her ready for school she played in CJ’s room while I got ready. I found her snuggled down in CJ’s bed, she was ready for a nap.

She did stay awake at school but fell asleep in the 10 minutes it took to get the kids to their paper routes. That will mean she will refuse to go to sleep at bedtime and keep us up until nearly 11 or so.

365/229 Never far from the action

The girls and Ruby are never far from where we are working. CJ sets up a mini “tea party” and Ruby is always eager to step on a board or stick her nose in your ear.  Syd is usually right there as well to hand you tools, if she is not trying to use them herselfSmile

We have now made it into the kitchen. I, being the eager beaver in the house, am always whining “can we just do a few more rows tonight?”.  MJ has been helping me in the mornings lay a few rows between our appointments. I keep reminding myself that even a few rows is still progress.

365/228 Ticklefest

The girls love it when Dad comes home and they get to follow him around.  While he changes out of his work clothes, they play on the bed and CJ chats away about the day’s events.

They wait for him to come out and CJ tells him to “tickle me.”  Syd enjoys the ticklefest as well but I think that Hubby might enjoy it as much as the girls, just seeing the pure joy on their faces.

365/227 Tricky cuts

This is the stuff that is slowing our floor project down. Our 60 year old home has layers of moldings that we are not willing to remove, even temporarily, or attempt to undercut. There are 32 such cuts overall and 14 still to go,  plus  2 curved walls and 2 angled walls.

I have been using the jig saw and though the cuts are not perfect, they will look better with putty and caulk.

We are getting close, just the kitchen and a few strips in the dining room.

365/226 getting over her fear

We worked on the flooring again for the majority of the day. Finished the living room, even with a 2 hour  mission to Home Depot to figure out what to do around the hearth.  We finished some tricky cuts in the entry way while MJ prepped the hall.

The old cork tiles can’t be removed easily so we decided to floor over them.  However, they are popping up at the seams, so we need to staple them down.  But…MJ was scared to death of the electric stapler. She thought she was going to shoot a staple into her foot or something. Hubby and I stapled a bit but it really was not the best use of our time. JD was “busy” (taking a nap) so MJ had to get over her fear and do the job. We are proud of her.  There isn’t anything this girl can’t do when she sets her mind to it!

365/225 A family affair

We got more than half way through the living room today. Tomorrow, we should finish it up and move to the entry way and hall.

This shot is a bit deceiving, it shows everybody working hard at assigned tasks.  CJ and Syd were asked to stay out of the way and not step on the rows we were trying to install. That worked part of the time. I took this picture while JD was assembling one of about three rows he helped with, the rest of the time he was fielding texts with his nose stuck in his PC. The life of a teen; the frustration of being a teen’s parent.

365/224 Back to normal

JD has returned from camp and things are back to normal already. He is chatting on Facebook and texting, “keeping up with my new friends”.  I’m glad the team building has worked, he now has more friends to text Smile

After seeing this picture, the subfloor looks like a finished hardwood floor.  But in person it is still just a subfloor full of nails and screws {sorry Hubby, we can’t get a refund on any of the flooring}.

We are ready to get up tomorrow and do flooring all day.  Let’s hope the kids cooperate.

365/223 So far so good

Warning: this might be the start of boring picture weekSmile

We now have the dining room nearly done, the last bit will have to wait until we go through the kitchen {and hope that the rows line up, keeping my fingers crossed, this is a 60 year old house}.

I need to get felt pads for the dining chairs {notice it is sitting on cardboard right now} they make a not so pleasant noise when they move on the floor.

365/222 Our Diva

We have been working in small chunks of time laying the floor.  We have laid the starting few rows which included one of the hardest part, our curved walls!

So far so good, but it makes me want to work around the clock to get it done {poor hubby is no match for my eagerness.}

CJ has been Daddy’s little helper. She has helped measure and here she was “taking notes”. I think she is eager to get the floor down too, she thinks it is a dance floor.

365/221 Prep work

After Pepper {aka: old dog} had a few too many accidents on the fluffy cream carpet, we decided it was best for all of our health if it went bye-bye. We ran through our options for replacements and our pocketbook helped decide that laminate was the answer.

Home Depot to the rescue. We found the color and style we liked on clearance. {Lucky us}

After hauling 75 boxes into the house I was chomping at the bit to rip the carpet up. I had to settle for removing all the tack strips and cutting the carpet in strategic places for easy removal later.

With Hubby’s work and our daily schedules, we were not going to have a large block of time to get the floor done all at once. I’m shooting for the end of August and then I can paint the trim as soon as school starts. {best laid plans and all that…}

365/220 He brought something back

Hubby took JD up to camp and helped him get set up.

After loading the baggage rack and cleaning my van out it turned out that Hubby could have driven his car. He only had 3 kids to transport and they hauled all the bags for all the kids in a cattle trailer.

Now the bad news…Just before Hubby left camp I got a call “I backed into a tree with your van.” I thought he was joking, but no. There were a couple dents and a few scratches in the drivers side doors.  Hubby hates to make any mistake, let alone a silly mistake like backing into an unmoving object.

MJ, with all her politeness, pointed out that the only two accidents that Mom’s van has been in, have been by Dad.  Wisdom at such a young age…

365/219 Getting ready

JD is getting ready for a week at Cross Country camp.  His new high school team goes away for a week every summer to bond as team and run run run.

He is a bit nervous; it is his first time sleeping in a tent but I think it will go well.

365/218 Relay for Life 2011

Today was a good day, or at least a day full of hope, if you choose to see some of the positives in life.

CJ and I participated in the 2011 Relay for Life for Gladwin County.

If you wanted to see life as a glass half empty, you could say it’s a little disheartening to be walking in circles and see the luminaries; reminders of loved ones no longer with us.

But it can also be seen as a positive sign when a diverse group of people in the community pull together for a common cause, standing up against something as formidable as cancer even when the causes are largely unknown and the chances for survival are sometimes less likely than winning the lottery.

For our family, it was a chance to help CJ understand that sometimes we need to do something extra to help others. It was also a chance to begin to explain why she can only get to know her Grandpa G through pictures and stories. It will be 4 years ago this month that we lost him, just 3 months after CJ was born.

What she’ll probably remember from today is how much candy and cookies my good friend Tony gave her and all the beads she got for walking around the track.

What I’ll take from today is the look of determination on her face as she was walking because she wanted her Grandma G to be impressed with how many beads she had accumulated. She was. CJ walked a total of 6 miles (4 miles in the afternoon and then 2 more miles in the evening). We tried to do our part to keep cancer at bay for at least one more day.

365/217 She could sleep just about anywhere

There is just no way to keep this kid awake if she is really tired. She just plops down where ever she is and falls off to sleep.

Sometimes it is just not worth fighting it; that is until bedtime and she simply is not tired anymore and keeps the rest of us awake late into the nightSmile

365/216 Yep we needed more

I seem to see this display case nearly everyday. Milk and more milk. To date we have consumed 239 gallons of milk. That is more than a gallon a day!

365/215 Routines

Syd is now back into the routine of school and extra speech therapy.

She has her little routines when we get to school. She is the only one in her class that does not ride the bus so we have to wait on the bench for her friends to arrive. She grabs her favorite book from the book rack, flips through it, and returns it to the rack. Then we take a walk through the halls and I point out things on the bulletin boards.

She loves her little routines.

365/214 Who’s winning?

The kids hung out with KS this evening, it was cooler this time and they spent most of the time in the house {go figure}.

JD finally had someone to compete in AQ Worlds, not sure who won the battle though.

365/213 Visitors

Look who popped in for a visit today. My brother and his kids stopped in while Heather went and checked in at work, she will be returning to the working world next weekSad smile

Little Man slept most of the visit and I did not get to hold him. But he is looking plumper every time I lay eyes on him {he even is getting cute baby rolls}

I think I can handle getting visits from these guys every weekSmile
